Well as you’ve perhaps noticed, I’ve been lacking posting anything for the last few days. It has been a very hectic week to say the least. You can say my week evolved around VVV-Venlo. It hasn’t been all positive, the news that is. I’ll try to explain it to you.
Our beloved football club VVV-Venlo has been in financial troubles since they were relegated from the 1st tier to the 2nd tier. In the ‘Eredivie’ the players earned way more money than in the 2nd tier called the Jupiler League. But their contracts were taken into the 2nd tier, so that’s the first problem. We also had a few players with non-eu contracts and the law states that they have to earn at least 500.000 Euros per year. That’s a lot for a club that has a yearly budget of 5 million.
The above wasn’t a problem in the Eredivisie, because there were enough sponsors. They paid a lot and so the club stayed healthy at the end of the day. After relegation those sponsors went to other clubs, because VVV weren’t playing in the Eredivisie anymore. So the problem is that you have the same expenses, but less income. That leads to negative budget results.
Following the relegation, teams are supported for three years by the KNVB, the dutch FA. They get 200.000 each year to compensate loss of sponsor. Still our financial problems seem to grow over the years. So the KNVB put us in category 1, meaning that we are under surveillance at the moment and have to do exactly what they order us to do.
